- the slopes of Mont Blanc have become totally overcrowded during the high season with between 30 and 50 tents being erected by hikers per night, all of whom are leaving behind their 'organic waste' - much to the dismay of the French authorities. The Daily Telegraph reports that gendarmes have now been posted on the upper slopes to prevent the peak from becoming a "high-altitude latrine" by imposing fines on any illegal 'camping'
