Hi there - on a perfect day, Winter is often just the most marvellous time here in CT: crisp early mornings and evenings and heavenly middays.  Fewer tour buses on the roads, just lots of our favorite people - Capetonians, out and about, taking in the bliss.......

  • grab some snacky things and head straight for your nearest beach, after work, to watch the sunset - have you noticed how it's setting later and later each day? - here comes Summer!

  • go for a brisk walk at lunchtime (instead of eating in the office, hunched over that laptop) and wherever you are, remember to look at The Mountain - the source of all our fabulous creative energy

Morning - recent scary stats, both food related, courtesy of The Week

  • 'China produced 50 million tonnes of pork in 2012 - more than half the world's total.  In 1980, the average Chinese person ate 14kgs of meat a year; now they eat almost 60kgs.  The average Briton eats 85kgs' - The Guardian.  Interestingly, South Africans consume far less meat than their fellow American, Australian or European countrymen

Hello - as we continue to celebrate Mandela's 95th birthday here in SA, two reminders from this wise man (for my family, in particular)

  • “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

Morning - who said nothing happens in CT on a Winter weekend?

  • nip out to Audacia Wine Farm on the R44, next to the strawberry farm, between Somerset West and Stellenbosch for the fairly new Route44 Market, held every Saturday & Sunday from 9:00 - 3:30 (come rain or shine) and 'smaak it at this market'.  Supposed to be the best market at the moment, loads of activities for the kids while you eat, wine-taste and shop till you drop!

Jervis Pennington, Carlo Daniels, Moenier Adams, Waasief Piekaan and Nkosekhaya Mgoqi

  • be entertained in the best way and support local theatre: get to The Kalk Bay Theatre for A Town called Fokol Lutho on until10 August. This capella musical has had rave reviews from the Grahamstown Festival and locally

Morning - two alarming news items regarding our planet

  • "according to one of the most in-depth analyses of British wildlife in recent years, The State of Nature report found that 60% of plant and animal species had declined in the past 50 years - and that one in ten were now facing extinction", says The Times.  For instance "turtle doves have declined by 93% since 1970, largely owing to changing agricultural practices"

image:dailypainters.com

  • the slopes of Mont Blanc have become totally overcrowded during the high season with between 30 and 50 tents being erected by hikers per night, all of whom are leaving behind their 'organic waste' - much to the dismay of the French authorities.  The Daily Telegraph reports that gendarmes have now been posted on the upper slopes to prevent the peak from becoming a "high-altitude latrine" by imposing fines on any illegal 'camping'
