Hello

A couple more interesting stats from 2012
image: vaniviswanathan.wordpress.com

  • The Times reports that "more households in India have a mobile phone than have a toilet.  Ten years ago, fewer than 4% of rural households had a mobile phone; now 54% do" - ditto SA, probably

  • happy in your job? maybe it's time to make that change.  It seems, according to City& Guilds/The Daily Mail, that only a few bankers are; yet an incredible 87% of horticulturists say they happy in their work - get weeding! it's cathartic

Morning

Before the first month of 2013 is out - a couple of random snippets from 2012, courtesy of The Week

  • according to a recent Gallup poll which asked residents from 148 countries five questions about whether they were happy, Singaporeans are the most miserable people in the world (no chewing gum???).  Panama and Paraguay residents topped the list with 85% responding yes to all questions (seriously?) - Daily Mail

  •  and, the Office for National Statistics says that the divorce rate in England and Wales has fallen to it's lowest point since the '70s, dropping from 45% in 2005 to 42% in 2011, except for one group: the 'silver splitters'.  The number of over-60s who have separated from their spouses has doubled in the last decade (and possibly moved to Panama/Paraguay?)

Hello

Here in CT,  we are well into our third day of gale force winds, with the outlook pretty much the same for the rest of the week - a fitting intro to the Suidoosterfees which officially starts this Tuesday.  Celebrating the festival's 10th anniversary with a truly varied programme throughout the City, the festival is also a tribute to Prof Jakes Gerwel who sadly passed away in Nov 2012

-Prof Jakes Gerwel 1946 - 2012

  • so (message to self) let's stop whining about the Cape Doctor and get wind/kite surfing instead.  There are loads of second-hand shops selling/renting out decent equipment, all over Town and in the coastal malls - the sun is out so go and give it a try

Good day!

Two interesting articles

image: The Washington Post

  • the first by Suzy Parker in the Washington Post: in her Capitol Hill swan song, there's proof of the rising popularity of Hillary Rodham Clinton,  "the Athena Hillary - the wise warrior who slays Republicans (especially men) with iciness and harshness". Trust her 'retirement' will include lots of exercise and less food - more warrior style, please (from a big fan)
